Bob Married his beloved wife Rita Anderson in 1966. A decade later tragedy struck as they were preparing for a free concert organized by then Prime Minister Michael Manley. Days before this event gunmen invaded Marley’s home inflicting serious injuries on his wife and manager, Don Taylor, while Bob himself sustained minor injuries (The Jamaica Daily News).

Amidst life challenges and personal struggles, Marley encountered both triumphs and tragedy throughout his life. Bob Marley’s life ended tragically in Florida on May 11, 1981, at the early age of 36 from acral lentiginous melanoma a rare form of skin cancer that spread to other parts of his body (Moskowitz). During the pinnacle of his career, Marley received this devastating diagnosis in 1977, however, his commitment to his Rastafarian beliefs, led him to decline conventional medical advice, including having his toe amputated and receive cancer treatments. Instead, he opted for other treatments but unfortunately, they were unsuccessful in stopping the progression of this disease (Moskowitz).

Remarkably despite his cancer diagnosis, Bob Marley continued to live life to the fullest without neglecting his usual activities. He toured globally, graced stages with his performances and created new music. Ultimately, his choice to forego conventional medical treatment proved to be unsuccessful. His passion for soccer remained with him often finding time to play a game, as depicted in the ‘One Love’ movie. During a match with friends in Central Park, New York he suffered a seizure. At this stage, his cancer had advanced, and he was given months to live, nevertheless, he maintained a positive outlook. Known to many as the undisputed King of Reggae music, he had succumbed to his illness, his death was a significant loss to the music world and his fans globally, leaving behind a legacy that is an inspiration to many.
